After dark

Still sweating
From every pore
From every eyeful
Every clenched fist
Sleep pulls me under
Then spews me
Across the sheets
Drenched in moonlight
Soaked in stars
Thrown through the panes
To this dirty old town
And its bubbling gutters

If I land on my knees I will pray
To all the night's neon deities
Like a wakened heathen
Like a sleeping believer

Stay with me
After dark
We will play host
To dancing angels
Trampling our souls to dirt
Under their celestial slippers
